What is this spooky old Haus?

Well, it's a pet project that I started playing around with a few years back. It was originally intended to be something to do while I found the perfect lair to call my own. I started on a few projects (some of which I still need to finish) and unexpectedly, I found:

The concept is relatively simple. Take This Old House and apply it in a dark, macabre weird, and interesting way. To hell with french country cottage, I want a medieval torture chamber, or gothic haunted house. Now, IMO, just decorating in a spooky way (or any way) is relatively simple. It does take effort, care and thought, but you can do a lot with relatively little commitment. That's not what (or at least not just what) I want to do. I want to come up with and make things that are less "throw black lace over a table" and more "build a coffin coffee-table" or "build a home dungeon" etc... So let's call it spooky and macabre for the power tool inclined.

Why does this appeal to me?

Well, I grew up watching This Old House with my dad (one of the few shows we both liked) and it was one of my favorite shows (yes, I was a freaky little kid). I also had a great fondness for the darker and more morbid side of things. I grew up desperately wanting to live in a house like the Addams family or the Munsters had. Tragically, I grew up in a 1 story ranch that my dad built. Actually it was/is a nice house, but it's just not my style.

When I was a kid those dreams of living in a big rambling spooky old house went unfulfilled. Then I got older and (shockingly) I went into the construction industry. In fact, today, I actually build things for a living. Lo and behold, now, I can do something about living in a big rambling spooky old house.

So, basically, the idea for this section is to chronicle what I do with my current lair as well as hopefully come up with ideas and schemes that other folks could adapt to their own humble and cobwebby abodes. I'm still not sure where I'm going with either the blog or my house, but I imagine that it will be an interesting trip...

Welcome!
